Safari 6 missing RSS

Originator:CocoaNative
Number:rdar://12025132 Date Originated:2012/08/03
Status:Open Resolved:
Product:Safari Product Version:6
Classification:Serious Bug Reproducible:Always

Summary:
RSS Feeds no longer function in Safari 6.

Steps to Reproduce:
Open an RSS bookmark bundled with Safari installation, or from the Web like at the bottom of this web page: http://www.apple.com/

Expected Results:
Display of linked content.

Actual Results:
Safari tries to find some other app to open the RSS "feed:" URI. In older OSes, Apple's Mail would handle it, though poorly. In the current OS, no Apple software handles it.

Regression:
Safari 5.x (the previous versions) handled this fine.

Notes:
Cannot be intentional because Apple still ships Safari with RSS bookmarks and uses RSS on its own Web pages. No suitable alternative notification technology or RSS support exists.

Comments

I think it is intentional

Obviously, it's a decision that went without public comment. I am forced to stick with Lion and iOS 5 until RSS gets added back. I use RSS for several dozen sights to allow me to sort through the data faster. There is a discussion on Apple support's site, and apparently several hundred (or more) people have sent feedback, but no one seems to have heard from Apple. When Apple users using the new iPhone were complaining about Apple's complacent placement of their own Maps app in iOS 6, I just thought, ok, where we go again. Another RSS-like mistake.
