Safari hangs when typing in Smart Search Field

Summary: Often, when typing in the Smart Search Field, all of Safari will hang, with the coloured spinning cursor/'beachball' cursor appearing. The only way to continue is to wait for Safari to exit or Force Quit Safari. I have about 45 hang log files from Safari hanging in this way in Console.app. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open Safari (any way) 2. Click in the Smart Search Field 3. Start typing Expected Results: Text appears in the Smart Search Field. Actual Results: Safari hangs. Version: Safari Version 9.0.1 (11601.2.7.2) on OS X El Capitan version 10.11.1 (15B42) Notes: Configuration: This happens often (frequently – several times a day), but is not always reproducable.
