Marked as duplicate of 35326833 Summary: Disk Utility fails to restore an APFS volume to another disk Steps to Reproduce: Boot to Recovery Mode Open Disk Utility Connect external drive Select external drive and 'restore' from internal drive I've tried erasing or partitioning first, makes no difference Expected Results: internal drive cloned to external drive Actual Results: clone task runs, verifies, then fails at the very last step with error "APFS inverter failed to invert the volume" invalid arguement Version/Build: 17.0.3 (1646) since verified still broken on 18.0 (1667) Configuration: all current attempts have been on a Mac Mini to another Mini in thunderbolt target disk mode since verified also broken when USB external disk is the destination. Apple requested sysdiagnose output, which is not available in Recovery Mode.
