n an application developed via the iPhone SDK one is unable to obtain the WiFi SSID or network name. Understandably the user has chosen or setup to allows the iPhone to choose a WiFi network in the Settings application. For some enterprise applications it would be beneficial to be able to query for the WiFi network name to know if you're on the correct internal network. Without that first step is is much harder to query and determine if the servers you need are reachable correctly or not.

Comments

The App we are working on and the location infrastructure that we are creating needs a list of WIFI SSIDs and signal strength. This is an absolute necessity for our application and would greatly appreciate if iOS SDK can provide a way to do this.

Same as all the comments above..

I need my application to be able to listen to aired SSID, without that, the app is useless.

iOS SDK needs to include read access to the list of available SSIDs, and perhaps signal strength.

I'm creating an app that requires precise location awareness when used indoors. Specifically, it needs to know which business it is in. Apple's location API is insufficient when used indoors; it reports a huge possible radius. We came up with a solution: Plugin a WiFi access point with an SSID encoded with a location code, into each business's building. However, we need to be able to see a list of WiFi SSIDs that are in the area. We don't need to connect to any; only know what's in the area, and perhaps their signal strength. The WiFi isn't even being used for internet access, but rather as a beacon. (Our customers need to be able to download our app, walk into a 3rd party business, and use our app with that business over GPRS, without ever configuring their phone to connect to the business's WiFi. Hence, seamless.)

If Apple could include read access to available SSID information in its iOS SDK, I'd appreciate it.

Ditto

I have a client whose entire app concept is built around WiFi network detection and connection, so I need this too.

i need this too

it will be very important because it is a secure method to determine if that user is really near your when wifi are not available, or to assure that the user is near your network.
