Messages Incorrectly Combines Recipients with same Home Phone

Originator:justatheory

Status:Open Resolved:
Product:OS X Product Version:10.11 (15A284)
Classification:Serious Bug Reproducible:Sometimes

Summary:
My daughter got an iPod Touch, and I started iMessaging with her on OS X and iPhone. At some point I restarted Messages on my Mac, and it incorrectly combined my wife and my daughter into a single recipient. Messages intended for my wife went to my daughter!

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Find a iMessage recipient in Messages.
2. Note the home phone for said recipient. Should not be used for iMessage or SMS.
3. Create another Contact with the same home phone number.
4. Start iMessaging with the new recipient in Messages, but not via that home phone.
5. Restart Messages

Expected Results:
Two recipients should be maintained as separate threads/tabs/panes/whatever in Messages. Messages can be sent or received with each recipient independently.

Actual Results:
Both recipients end up in a single thread/tab/pane/whatever. Messages can be received from both, but sent only to one (the one that appears first in Contacts, I think).

Version:
10.11 (15A284)

Notes:
I tried removing the tab/pane/whatever with the combined recipients, but they were still combined when new messages were sent. The only way I found to detangle them was to remove the home phone number from my daughter's Contact info and restart messages.

Oh, and after sending the update, I went back into contacts, deleted the home phone number for Anna, and restarted messages. Anna and Julie are once again displayed as separate recipients, and the exchange with Julie is properly displayed in Julie's tab, not Anna's.

Here you go. After installing the profile, here's what I did:

  • Quit Messages
  • In Contacts, added a Home Phone number to my daughter's (Anna's) card. This is exactly the same home number listed for my wife (Julie). All the messages displayed from between Anna and me. None with Julie appear.
  • Launched Messages, saw that messages from Anna and Julie are now all displayed as a single recipient (showing my Anna's name but Julie's contact photo!).
  • From my iPhone, sent an iMessage to Julie asking for a reply. I could not do it from OX X, because it would have gone to Anna, instead. My message appears in Messages on OS X.
  • Julie replied with "Teaching". It appeared in the list of messages for the "Anna" recipient.
  • I replied from my iPhone with a "Thx" and generated the diagnostic report.

HTH!

Um…those instructions appear to be for an iOS device. This bug is in OS X, not iOS. I thought maybe I could make it work on OS X, but when I tried to install the profile, System Preferences says it's for iOS only. See attached screenshot.

Please send instructions for getting the data you need on OS X. Thank you!
