Summary: In previous versions of Safari, there was a relatively narrow maximum width for tabs. This max width would come into play in windows with few tabs (1, 2, maybe 3). In Safari 5.2, tabs consume the full width of the window, even if there are only one or two tabs. I find that this is aesthetically unpleasing, and would like to see the old tab bar return.

... also disagree
I kind of like the wide tabs. And wish I could have them with a leaner "tabs-on-top" solution.

Disagree.
The reason the big tabs seem aesthetically unpleasing to some people is because they are used to the old way. The new way is a simpler, clearer, more useful design; I'd wager $100 that if they stay, gruber will like them better than the old way a year from now.

amen brother... seeing the width jump around when opening and closing tabs just breaks my heart

Seems like an iOS-fication feature, not a bug
Full width tabs also exist in iPad Safari 5.x (where it is also aesthetically unpleasing).
